UNCONFIRMED REPORT:
Good news for lamb farmers today with a source telling Farmgirl that he has a Silver Fern Farms farmer contract for $6 a kilogram. This would suggest that the Federated Farmers figure of $150 a lamb may not be that unrealistic after all.
If you have had a similar contract or can confirm these figures or give us a heads up on Alliance winter contracts please let us know!

Hi Nadine,
Love the new blog, it's great to see a well expressed and strong opinion on rural issues. Just getting in touch to let you know we've launched a new rural website, www.ruraltrader.co.nz, it'd be great if you can check it out and let me know what you think. You can get me direct at alan@ruraltrader.co.nz
This would sound excellent, however, I've (accountant, mainly farming client base) heard nothing of it from my clients.
Worse, I heard a report last week that while up until that week demand for lamb in the Uk had been very good, over that week it had, quote, 'vapourised', and I've been trying to find out more on that.\
Love to see more input to this thread.
I'll send an email around my sheep farmers tomorrow.
Alan - thanks - will take a look!
Mark - That would be wonderful. Let us know how you get on.
I've had a provisional confirmation of this, I'm following up with the client via a second email, but his original email was (and I've taken out names for now):
"[Name withheld until I identify who the named person was speaking on behalf of :) ] spoke at the [South Canterbury] monitor farm day on Tuesday and said that price will be over $6.00/ Kg in the winter."
I suspect all my other farming clients are running around with no clothes on enjoying the rain :) But hopefully I'll otherwise get a definite on contract (or not).
I suddenly have a vision of naked men running wild in the hills down South!
Thanks for the confirmation!
Further replies. The below sums it up pretty well, quote:
"$5.55- $6.22 for 21kg lambs, $5.10-$5.80 for 17kg lambs.
$8.50- $10 for 50kg Venison, these are Backbone contracts i think through until 2010 have SFF rep. calling next week to show me contracts, more details Rural News page 4.
Not sure of time frames but see lamb up 5c for next weeks schedule"
